bevor die schmetterlingförmige insel von Columbus 1493 nach einem spanischen Kloster benannt wurde, wurde sie von ihren damaligen bewohnern Karukera genannt, "insel der schönen wasser". und das ist sie in der tat. wir haben das per land- und wasserausflügen, beim schnorcheln und beim tauchen erforscht und können das mit dem schönen wasser bestätigen. das meer sowie der regenwald machen einen gesunden und saftigen eindruck. wir bleiben einige tage, unternehmen ein paar wanderungen,und denken uns nichts dabei.
- stopp Dominica
auf Dominica lernen wir, dass grapefruits eigentlich süss schmecken, und die insel wegen ihrer ausserodentlichen fruchtbarkeit und artenvielfalt der botanische garten der karibik ist. die schöne insel hat damals Wai´tukubuli gehiessen, "insel der vielen schlachten" ( was wir uns nicht erklären können, aber was wohl ein zeichen dafür ist, dass es dort nicht schon immer so gemütlich war ). aber auch heute geht noch nicht alles mit rechten dingen zu. zum beispiel rüsten die Japaner hier und auch auf anderen Karibikinseln die fischer mit grossen aussenbordern für ihre pyrogen aus, sind ganz freundlich und bauen kostenlose häfen für die insel, und zum ausgleich dürfen sie in dieser gegen die wale weiter ausrotten. unglaublich, so einfach wird politik gemacht. im kleinen so im grossen, bei uns und auch im oosten.
- stopp Martinique
wir erreichen die bucht vor dem dorf St. Pierre in der abenddämmerung, es ist gerade noch hell genug um die umrisse der anderen ankerlieger erkennen zu können. am nächsten tag besuchen wir das interessante museum des ortes und erfahren die tragische geschichte über den ort. die einst grosse hafenstadt war lange jahre ökonomischer und kultureller mittelpunkt der französischen Antillen, bis am 8. mai 1902 der gipfel des vulcans Mont Pelee zerbarst und innerhalb von minuten die stadt unter einer gewaltigen masse von gestein, lava und flutwellen begrub. die 30.000 einwohner der stadt starben auf einen schlag, nur ein mensch überlebte das unglück. das war kurioserweise der gefangene Louis-Auguste Cyparis, der wegen mordes in der todeszelle des kerkers auf seine hinrichtung wartete. später zog er, mit all seinen verbrennungen und dieser unglaublichen geschichte, als besondere attraktion mit einem amerikanischen zirkus durch die welt. das dramatische an dieser geschichte ist, dass der vulkan schon wochen vorher anfing zu grummeln und zu rauchen und die bewohner vor einem eventuellen ausbruch fliehen wollten. doch der gouverneur kam in die stadt, beruhigte die leute und riet ihnen dort zu bleiben. denn am 10. mai fanden die wahlen statt, und die regierung fürchtete, dass diese bei einer evakuierung der stadt im allgemeinen chaos untergehen würde. also blieben und starben die leute. jetzt ist St. Pierre ein dorf, das sich nie ganz von der katastrophe erholt hat.
wir bleiben nur einen tag und fahren in die heutige hauptstadt Port du France und verbringen einen ganzen nachmittag damit, durch die ziemlich europäische stadt zu laufen bis wir von all den bunten schaufenstern ganz wirr im kopf sind. ganz nett als abwechslung aber eindeutig nicht unser pflaster, also verabschieden wir uns bald von land und leuten.

hier hat es uns auf der hochfahrt am besten gefallen, darum wollen wir es uns hier nochmal so richtig gemütlich machen. ich kann nur sagen jaaaa.
ich weiss nicht was es ist, aber die insel mögen wir. es ist wohl einfach die landschaft, die, obwohl die karibischen inseln ja immer nur ein paar kilometer von einander entfernt sind, bei jeder einzigartig ist. die einen sind flach und trocken, und die anderen, wie eben zum beispiel St. Vincent, bergig und regenwaldig. oft liegt das daran, dass die wolken sich an den bergen stauen und dann ausregnen. ein wasserproblem gibt es hier so bald nicht !
was hier auch noch besonders schön ist, ist der riesige und bunte markt in der hauptstadt Kingstown.
ansonsten war es vielleicht einfach die aura oder der geruch der insel der uns in beschlag genommen hat.
aber fast nichts ist unendlich, darum segeln wir weiter nach süden. denn die hurrican saison rückt näher und die zeit drängt ein bisschen. je weiter südlich man kommt, desto sicherer ist man vor den stürmen.
deshalb legen wir nur einige kurze aber schöne stopps auf Bequia, Mayreau und selbstverständlich noch einmal in den Tobago Cays ein. dabei haben wir ein wunderbares schnorchelerlebnis, bei dem schwarze riffhaie nur 2 meter von uns entfernt ihre kreise ziehen. dann kommt endlich wieder Grenada in sicht, wir fangen noch geschwind zwei barracudas auf dem weg und düsen heim nach Hog Island. da grillen und essen wir sogleich unsere beute mit allen leuten die wir zusammentrommeln können. ein paar tage später gibt es als besonderes ereignis spanferkel auf Hog. wir bauen 3 tage lang an einem grill und drehen ein 40-kilo-schweinchen acht stunden lang am spiess. kulinarisch erwähnenswert ist da noch ein dicker red snapper den wir geräuchert haben. das war nicht ganz so anstrengend wie das ferkel, aber trotzdem geschmacklich spektakulär.
dann erleben wir noch einen zweiten carneval in diesem jahr, die leute hier bilden sich ein, umbedingt im sommer fasching feiern zu müssen. das ganze dauert einen monat und ist ein irre spektakel, die einheimischen sind alle völlig aus dem häuschen und freuen sich noch vor dem ende der einen party auf den beginn der nächsten. höhepunkte sind die parade und die grosse massenschlamm und farbschlacht die um 4 uhr morgens beginnt und das mooto creatures of the night bedient. doch dann kommt unaufhaltsam und viel zu schnell der tag, an dem sich Eva verabschieden muss. sie macht eine kleine Bayernkur und kommt in sechs wochen zurück. wir teffen uns dann anfang september in Trinidad wieder. ich bleibe noch ein bisschen in Grenada. um die zeit "alleine" ein wenig zu verkürzen hab ich auf nem schicken grossen racer für eine regatta rund um Carriacou angeheuert. da gibt es sozusagen so etwas wie eine eventwoche. tagsüber werden verschiedene regatten veranstaltet und abends dann immer die gleiche party, nehme ich an. zum abschluss ist zur erholung und für ein leichteres hinübergleiten in den normalen alltag ein eselsrennen durch das hauptstädchen Hillsborough angesagt. ich muss zum erstenmal Kismet in einer ankerbucht für eine woche sich selbst überlassen, ich hab ein schlechtes gewissen, aber da müssen wir beide jetzt einfach durch. mitte august segel ich dann nach Trinidad um Eva wiederzusehen und unseren nächsten trip vorzubereiten. aber davon wird noch nichts verraten !!! hoffentlich wird es für uns alle eine schöne überraschung................
